Camping at Baysbrown

Baysbrown Farm Campsite is situated in the heart of Great Langdale and provides a simple base for Duke of Edinburgh expeditions in the area.

We are happy to welcome DofE groups where we have availability, but we are a family campsite and need to ensure that DofE groups can camp alongside our other guests without changing the character of the site.

For this reason, DofE camping is by prior arrangement only. Please email us before your expedition to check availability.

2026 DofE price

£10 per person per night

All DofE camping must be paid for before or upon arrival.

Important booking conditions

NO SATURDAY EVENINGS OR BANK HOLIDAY WEEKENDS

Due to the increasing size of DofE groups, we are unable to accommodate students arriving on Saturday evenings or during bank holiday weekends.

DofE groups can be considered for Sunday to Friday evenings, subject to availability.

ONE LARGE GROUP AT A TIME

We are no longer able to accommodate multiple large DofE groups on the same night.

As group sizes have increased, having several large groups staying at the same time can significantly change the atmosphere and use of the campsite. We want to continue to offer a pleasant experience for both DofE students and our other campers, so we have had to put a limit on the number of larger groups we can accommodate on any one night.

Please do not assume that because we have space on the campsite, we can accommodate several groups together. All DofE groups must be agreed with us in advance.

Smaller groups may sometimes be accommodated alongside other DofE groups, depending on numbers and the other campers staying at the time.

INSTRUCTOR REQUIREMENTS

An instructor must stay on site with:

  • All Bronze groups
  • All Silver groups
  • Gold groups of more than six students

The instructor does not have to camp directly with the students but must remain responsible for the group’s behaviour throughout their stay.

The instructor must also ensure that the students understand and follow the campsite rules and check that the facilities have been left clean and tidy before the group leaves.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE

DofE groups must arrive during our normal arrival times:

2pm – 8pm

Please allow enough time to arrive, check in and settle your group before the evening.

All groups must check in and pay before pitching.

PLEASE ASK STUDENTS TO RESPECT THE CAMPSITE

Baysbrown is a family campsite and is shared with other campers. We ask DofE groups to remember that they are guests alongside other people who may have come to enjoy the peace and quiet of Great Langdale.

Quiet hours: 11pm – 7am

There must be no noise between 11pm and 7am.

Please ensure students understand that talking and socialising must not disturb other campers during these hours.

Please also:

  • Keep the campsite clean and take all rubbish to the bins provided.
  • Do not use the shower or toilet block as a social meeting place.
  • Large rucksacks are not permitted in the shower block.
  • Always be considerate of other campers.
  • Respect the surrounding countryside, wildlife, trees and plants.
  • Leave all gates as you find them.
  • Leave your camping area clean and tidy when you depart.

Groups that repeatedly fail to follow these rules may not be accepted for future stays.

A NOTE ABOUT THE SIZE OF GROUPS

We understand that DofE groups can vary considerably in size.

Our decision to limit the number of larger groups staying at the same time is not a reflection on individual schools or organisations. It is simply necessary to maintain the atmosphere of the campsite and ensure that we can continue to welcome DofE groups alongside our other guests.

We therefore reserve the right to limit the number and size of DofE groups staying on any particular night.

All groups must be agreed with us in advance.

BOOKING FOR THE FOLLOWING YEAR

Bookings for each year will open on 1st January.

We will not accept bookings for the following year before 1st January, including bookings or requests made while groups are staying with us during the current year.

This ensures that all groups have the same opportunity to request dates when bookings open.

BEFORE YOUR EXPEDITION

Please email us with:

  • School or organisation name
  • DofE level
  • Number of students
  • Number of instructors
  • Arrival date
  • Departure date

We will then confirm whether we are able to accommodate your group.
